Teri Meri Kahaani, an ambitious new film starring in-demand Bollywood stars Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor, continued its globe-trotting week of premieres with a Toronto debut Friday night.
As with several high-profile Indian films in recent years, Teri Meri Kahaani is being unveiled at a number of splashy red-carpet premieres, including Dubai on Wednesday, London on Thursday and Toronto on Friday. A large crowd gathered outside of downtown Toronto's Winter Garden Theatre on Friday afternoon.
Both Chopra and Kapoor have previously raved about the city. The comely Chopra has visited the city during the Toronto International Film Festival as well as 2011's International Indian Film Academy Awards, while Kapoor shot part of his 2008 romantic comedy Kismat Konnection in the Ontario capital.
I love Toronto and I have such fantastic memories of the city when I was filming Kismat Konnection, he said in a statement.
Director Kunal Kohli's romantic drama Teri Meri Kahaani comprising a trio of love stories set in three different eras, all starring Chopra and Kapoor harkens to films such as Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Three Times and American Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain.
Friday's North American premiere came following a troubled opening of the film at Dubai's Mall of the Emirates on Wednesday. A massive mob of fans waited for hours to greet the Bollywood pair, previously seen together in the film Kaminey and formerly romantically involved in real life.
When the stars arrived hours late for that 8 p.m. screening, violence erupted between fans and security guards. A dangerous crush occurred, with local media reporting that many fans were pushed, punched and shut out of the cinema.
