India and Pakistan agree to continue their talks on the Tulbul navigator project on the Jhelum in Kashmir, despite differences over various provisions of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960.

12/31/1998Air Chief Marshal Anil Yashwant Tipnis, PVSM, AVSM, VM, ADC., became the Air Officer Commanding, India Command. He is the 18th Air Chief Marshal.
12/31/1998Sher Shah Sur died. He was fatally wounded in an explosion on Kalanjara fort while preparing for an attack. He introduced the new silver rupee-coin ""Rupiya"" based on ratio of 40 copper coin pieces (paisa) per rupee and built several roads including the longest road of India known as Grand Trunk Road (now Natioinal Highway-2).
