Historical Event on 3/18/1919

Rowlatt Act, intended to perpetuate the extraordinary powers enjoyed by the Government under Lord Chelmsford during the war, provokes countrywide protests. This Rowlatt Act was forced instead of 1915 Indian Security Act which reduced freedom of Indian people.

1/31/1941Second Lieutenant Premindra Singh Bhagat of the Bombay Sappers showed an act of unparalleled bravery and inspiring leadership when commanding a detachment of 21 Field company of the Bombay Sappers on the road to Gondar, in Abyssinia. Hence, The Victoria Cross (VC) was bestowed upon him and he became the first Indian Commissioned Officer receipeant of The Victoria Cross (VC).

3/30/1997Congress Party withdraws support to the 10-month old H. D. Deve Gowda Government at the centre, and stakes its claim to form an alternative government.
12/29/1885A group of middle-class intellectuals in India, some of them British, found the Indian National Congress to be a voice of Indian opinion to the British government. This was the origin of the later Congress Party which was founded in Bombay.
5/25/1611Emperor Jahangir married Meherunnisa, widow of Sher Afghan. She recieved the title Noor Jahan.
4/13/1699Khalsa Panth established.
4/26/1858Kunwar Singh, revolutionary of Indian mutiny and freedom fighter, passed away. He fought his last battle near Jagdishpur, Bihar on April 23, 1858 and defeated the Britishers but was deeply wounded. He also organised the national rebels.
5/20/1996Janaki Ramachandran, chief minister of Tamil Nadu (1988), passed away.
12/4/1661Murad Baksh was executed on the charge of murdering Diwan Ali Nagi.
10/20/1997Veerappan, the forest brigand, releases the six hostages after 12 days.
