Historical Event on 4/30/1870

Dadasaheb Phalke alias Dhundiraj Gobind Phalke was born at Trymbakeshwar near Nasik, Maharashtra. He is remembered as the 'Father of Indian Cinema'. He produced India's first feature Film, 'Raja Harishchandra' and founded Phalke & Co. at Bombay. He was a director, producer, writer, editor & laboratorian, portrait photographer and also a scene-painter.

4/13/1919Jallianwala Baug massacre. The great Indian tragedy occured in Amritsar which claimed 389 lives and wounded 1,516 activitists fighting for Indian independence. Early in 1919, the Rowlatt Act (Black Act) was passed. This authorized the Government to imprison any person without any trial and conviction in a court of law. This furious act was under the guidence of cruel Brigedier General R. E. H. Dyer and his 50 men troop. Michael O' Dwyer was then the Governor of Punjab who naturally defended the action. This day is observed as Jallianwala Baug Day.

5/11/1911Shrimati Lalitadevi, wife of second Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri, was born.
12/28/1977Sumitranandan Pant, famous Hindi poet and literaeur, died.
8/7/1871Abanindranath Tagore, great modern artist and painter, was born at Jorasanko in Calcutta.
6/20/1858Gwalior fort was captured by British troops and the first Indian Sepoy Mutiny officially came to an end.
5/2/1992President J.B.Patnaik, former Orissa CM and PCC (I), arrested on corruption charges.
1/20/1684Treaty between Marathas and Portuguese.
10/9/1970Production of Uranium 233 started at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Bombay.
6/6/1903A full length theatre plays like 'Bankimchandrer Sitararn', 'Alibaba' , 'Bhramar', 'Hariraj' , 'Sarla' and 'Buddhadeb' were released at Classic Theatre. These plays were picturised by Hiralal Sen with support of great dramatist Amar Nath Dutt. The main roles were performed by Amar Dutt, N.C. Basu and Kusum Kumari and rest of the characters belonged to the Classic Theatre of Calcutta. They received a great applause from the audience.
