World sports award of the century given away in Vienna. The jury included IOC chief Samaranch, FIFA President Sepp Blatter, Prince Albert of Monaco and motor racing chief Max Mosley. Award winners were: contact sports Muhammad Ali, Soccer-Pele, athletics-Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci, water sport Dawn Fraser and Mark Spitz; motor sport Alain Prost, tennis-Steffi Graf, basketball-Michael Jordan, winter sports (skiing) Annemarie Moser-Proell and Jean-Claude Killy.

1/4/1932Mahatma Gandhi and other members of his All-India National Congress are back in jail again. After the collapse of the London conference, British authorities cracked down even harder on Gandhi and his followers, and the Mahatma urged Indians to increase their acts of civil disobedience. ""Wake up from sleep,"" Gandhi said as he ordered a boycott of British goods. ""Discard foreign cloth. Discard narcotics. Discard violence. Defy all orders calculated to crush the national spirit."" The government declared Gandhi's Congress an illegal organization. Under new laws, even peaceful picketing is illegal. The Congress party responded to the crackdown by recruiting more followers and striking more plants.
10/2/1942Menka Devi, freedom fighter, was arrested by the police when she and her friends were carrying out Gandhi Jayanti procession. She was tortured with cigar butts and the administration set her house on fire.
8/20/1995305 killed and 345 injured in collision between Purushottam Express and Kalindi Express at Murlinagar near Firozabad (UP).
3/24/1998200 people are killed in a tornado on both sides of the West Bengal-Orissa border. The toll includes 80 from West Bengal's Midnapore district.
7/28/1914Japanese boat 'Kamagata Maru' was compelled to deport to India from Vancouver, Canada. The ship was boarded with active freedom fighters who were against the British Government.
